Styling as an Alternative to Male Pattern Baldness

Thinning hair and hair loss can be debilitating and humiliating. My younger brother first experienced thinning hair in his early twenties and as he is now a 34-year-old man, it is far worse. My brother and I have always poked, jokingly and lovingly, at each other’s weaknesses, but his hair loss is not one of those things that I am allowed to joke about. It is just too sensitive a topic. This sensitivity is compounded by the fact that there is no cure for male pattern baldness. At best it can only be managed. It is also important to know that it is easier to hold on to the hair you have rather than grow more. Knowing that, choosing an excellent hair product to style thinning hair is essential.

Men experience thinning hair or hair loss, also referred to as male pattern baldness, as a result of genetics and hormones. The hormone DHT is one such element responsible for male pattern baldness. It shrinks the hair follicle until it is too small to continue growing the hair strand. Hair loss can also be the result of stress or illness (as opposed to male pattern baldness). If this is the case it will often reverse itself. About 85% of men will experience major thinning hair by the time they are 50, and some will experience hair loss by the age 21. The thinning or loss can occur in patches or circular patterns and cause significant psychological distress. Because of the emotional consequences of male pattern baldness on the sufferer, MANY treatments and products exist.

Treatment methods and successes vary wildly, from a few FDA approved medications to transplants, and men are often simply encouraged just to accept the hair loss as the best “treatment”. Of course, a variety of products can help regrow and/or manage thinning hair, and there are an overwhelming amount of mens hair products for thin hair. Contrary to popular belief combing, brushing and styling thinning hair will not promote more thinning (although interestingly smoking will), just be sure to be gentle so as to not break strands. Styling thinning hair is a reasonable and effective option. Something as simple as stylized combover with the right product can go a long way for disguising thinning hair. And several products exist not only as stylers but also as aids to hair regrowth and nourishment. Quality products may include ingredients such as Jojoba oil, Kaolin, Lanolin and Bentonite.

Working thin hair with easy to apply hair products can do wonders for managing male pattern baldness. Ideal products will include superior and necessary ingredients and be soft and pliable in texture. As medications and transplants can be quite expensive and do entail side effects, using a styling cream to manage and disguise thinning hair or hair loss is a cost effective and simple solution. Male pattern baldness does not have to be the end all be all for a man’s self-esteem. With the right knowledge and products combating thinning hair and general hair loss is not just possible, it is an exceptional option.
